ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (AP) — The attorney for a man charged with shooting a U.S. Postal Service worker last month in suburban Chicago says his client is innocent.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that attorney Ralph Meczyk appeared in court Thursday during a hearing for 24-year-old Cameron Ruebusch of Elk Grove Village. Meczyk said he will ask for Ruebusch to be released while he awaits trial. Ruebusch is charged in federal court with assaulting a postal employee with a weapon.
Investigators say the postal worker had just gotten into his unmarked USPS vehicle on New Year’s Eve when Ruebusch tapped on his passenger window while holding a handgun. The worker was shot in his right shoulder as he drove away.
The worker, 36-year-old Stephen Casazza Jr., was released from the hospital Wednesday after nine days of recovery and treatment.
