Postal Service employees who tune into NBC’s coverage of New York City’s Independence Day fireworks display will see one of their own.
Kelly Mathaw, a Detroit letter carrier who appeared on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” in the spring to discuss her role as an essential public worker during the coronavirus pandemic, will be one of the guests on “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.”
NBC will air the special Saturday, July 4, from 8-10 p.m. EDT.
A crew for the TV special interviewed Mathaw at Brightmoor Station, where she works, and filmed her while she made deliveries on her route.
“We’ve delivered medicines and essential needs to customers through all kinds of crises,” Mathaw said during the interview. “When customers see us, they know everything is going to be OK. I am proud to be here every day as an example to my family and for our customers.”
Brian Eggleston, one of the show’s producers, called Mathaw “a shining example of the American spirit.… We loved her on ‘Kelly and Ryan.’”
Detroit District feels the same way about its hometown hero.
“Kelly makes us all proud,” said Detroit Postmaster Derron Bray. “I have no doubt her appearance will be outstanding.”
