FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Deborah Wright, the wife of Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Wright, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle for killing U.S. Postal Service letter carrier Ricky Armwood in a crash on October 2017.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that a District Court judge sentenced Wright to a year of unsupervised probation and suspended her driver license for a year. If Wright violates her probation, she could be jailed for 75 days.
Ussery’s decision closed an emotional hearing in which Armwood’s family and coworkers talked about their loss and demanded answers as to what caused the crash.
The crash happened on Morganton Road on Oct. 31, 2017, when Armwood was delivering mail to homes on Morganton Road. He had parked his mail truck in a travel lane with its warning flashers on and was in the vehicle when Wright struck it from behind, according to statements in court.
The truck flipped, and Armwood was thrown from the vehicle and crushed beneath it, prosecutor Lanny Freeman said.
