A Roxboro man died Friday afternoon and his teenage son was seriously injured when a car traveling in the opposite direction lost control and skidded into the path of their car.
Alonzo Russell, 53, of 500 Lee Chambers Road, Roxboro, died en route to the hospital after rescuers had to extricate him from the 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass he was driving, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper J.L. Stewart. Russell’s 13-year-old son was also in the car. He was transported to Duke Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
The wreck happened about one mile west of Roxboro on U.S. 158 about 4:45 p.m. The driver of a 2013 Dodge Dart, Froylan Matias Baltazar, 31, of 110 Turkey Feather Drive, Roxboro, was traveling east on U.S. 158 when he lost control of his car, which began to spin and drifted into the westbound lane, where it collided with Russell’s car. It was raining at the time of the wreck and Stewart said it was unclear if Baltazar’s car hydroplaned or if he lost control of the vehicle for some other reason. Baltazar suffered non life-threatening injuries in the wreck.
Stewart said it’s unclear whether charges will be filed against Baltazar. “Charges are pending. We have to talk to the (District Attorney’s) office,” Stewart said.
