Carbondale postal employee indicted for embezzling mail

CARBONDALE (WSIL) — A letter carrier for the Carbondale Post Office has been indicted for embezzling mail.

Athens A. Shorey, also known as Athens A. DeMartini, 33, of Cobden, was indicted Tuesday on two counts of embezzlement of mail by a postal service employee.

Shorey is accused of taking 13 pieces of mail, ten pieces on May 23 and then three pieces on May 27.

“After the alleged embezzlements were discovered, Shorey voluntarily resigned from her position with the Postal Service,” read a release Thursday from Steven D. Weinhoeft, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.
