President Joe Biden has ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff to honor U.S. service members and other victims of the Aug. 26 terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Flags should be flown at half-staff until Aug. 30 at sunset.
To fly the flag at half-staff, hoist the flag to the peak for an instant and then lower it to the half-staff position. The flag should be raised to the peak again before it’s lowered for the day.
The flag must be flown at half-staff from sunrise — or the hour when it’s raised — until the time of closing or no later than sunset (unless the flag is lighted).
The USPS Administrative Support Manual has additional guidelines on U.S. flag display and maintenance.
