ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A group of people who went the extra mile to protect their mail from thieves are still getting hit. At least two times in the last two weeks, a man armed with a crowbar broke into P.O. boxes during business hours.
“My initial move into having a P.O. box was security and safety, so that feels like it’s been breached again,” said Cora Romo, whose P.O. box was broken into last week.
Romo has her mail sent to the Uptown Station Post Office near Washington and Menaul. A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service confirms a man broke into several rows of P.O. boxes there on Friday, Jan. 18th and Friday, Feb. 1st.
Romo says when she went to pick up a package with a value of more than $100, she immediately realized something was off.
“I noticed that my box was already slightly ajar,” said Romo.
Romo says her box wasn’t even locked and there was no package inside.
“I was very disappointed,” said Romo.
Romo says she reported it to the Post Master at that location. She says he told her surveillance video does show a tall man with a crowbar walk into the post office.
“He just went ahead and popped open the parcel boxes with people coming and going,” said Romo.
