Ithaca postal carrier cited for careless driving

It took more than three months but an Ithaca mail carrier has been ticketed for careless driving for striking a bicyclist with his U.S Postal Service vehicle.

The incident occurred at 11:10 a.m. Nov. 8, but the driver, Matt Klintworth, did not immediately tell his supervisor as required, nor was the accident reported to police.

A couple of weeks later, a person who requested to remain anonymous, called the Morning Sun with information about the accident.

According to Ithaca Postmaster Tim Roberson. he found out about it from a witness.

“She came into the office and was all upset,” Roberson said. “She was parked right behind (Klintworth) and saw the whole thing.”

The accident occurred after the carrier had stopped and was getting ready to turn onto East Center Street from Industrial Parkway, the entrance to the North Ithaca Industrial Park just west of U.S 127.

The bicyclist, later learned to be a 29 year old male, was not hurt.

However, the postal vehicle did sustain damage, including a broken exterior mirror that required repairs.

By the time Roberson had spoken to the witness Klintworth had already completed his route and went home without reporting the incident.

“His role is that he is supposed to call me when an accident happens,” the postmaster said. “He did not report it to his supervisor as required. I had to call the carrier at home.”
