The USPS inspector general has identified some common themes it found after on site visits at five five low-performing and five high-performing districts to get their perspective on working at the facility and learn how workplace culture in different regions may affect efficiency.
Its report cited “several ineffective management practices that may have negatively impacted work culture as well as operational and financial performance.”
Critiques stem from:
Inadequate Communication and Supervisor Oversight – Managers in low-performing districts were not seen as doing enough to engage with employees to stress the importance of meeting facility objectives or following internal processes.
IG evaluators felt that managers were not an active presence on the work floor, and when they did meet with employees, it was often in group settings where staff could not ask follow-up questions or provide feedback.
This led to staff not having the proper context for important directives and being unable to get one-on-one guidance when they needed assistance, the audit found.
