As summer comes to an end, and the school bells begin to ring again, it is time to shift gears and prepare for the back-to-school rush. The streets will soon be bustling with children and teenagers heading to school, and it is crucial for all drivers to be extra cautious and responsible during this time.
Taking the following safety measures can go a long way to keep everyone safer:
n Know the speed limit. Not all school zones have the same speed limit. Some speed limits are as low as 10 or 15 miles per hour, while others may be 20. Look for the posted speed limit and follow them.
n Stop for school buses. When you see a bus with flashing red lights and a stop arm extended, you must stop no matter which direction you are heading. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is loading and unloading children unless the bus is on the other side of a divided road. When you stop, leave plenty of room so that children can get to and from a bus. The space 10 feet around a bus is considered the most dangerous for children because bus drivers cannot see children walking in that zone.
n Drive Distraction-Free. Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the primary task of safely operating a vehicle. It is advised that drivers must eliminate distractions and increase awareness while driving, as children may not pay attention as they cross a street. So it is crucial that drivers are always alert especially in school zones.
n Watch for pedestrians. Crosswalks near school zones are particularly busy before and after school, but not all of them have crossing guards, and not all students will wait to cross at the proper time. In fact, not all students will use crosswalks. Drive slowly and watch for pedestrians crossing the road or walking in the road. Always give the pedestrian the right-of-way and follow any signals given by crossing guards.
n Go slowly past parked cars. Children can appear seemingly out of nowhere when they run out from between parked cars to cross the street. Drive slowly and keep your eyes active to scan for movement, not just on the street and sidewalk, but between parked vehicles as well. In this situation, the right lane may not be the lane of least resistance. When you have a choice, the center or left lane may be a better option.
Increased vigilance is required by all motorists to prevent accidents. Ensuring that school zones are respected, speed limits are obeyed, and monitoring for unattended children helps create a safer environment for everyone. By following these tips, drivers can help ensure a safe and smooth back-to-school season for everyone.
