Popular Derry postmaster at ‘heart of community’ retires after 26 years at helm

Dermot McCorriston has been Postmaster at Waterside since November 1998

Waterside postmaster Dermot McCorriston has retired after nearly 27 years at the helm of Spencer Road Post Office.

He has been overwhelmed with thanks and good wishes from customers in person, cards and online ahead of his last day serving his community on Wednesday.

Dermot’s links with the Waterside community span 30 years as he was previously the manager of Wellworths store in Spencer Road where the Post Office used to be based.

Dermot relocated the Post Office to its current location in 1998 when he opened a new convenience store.

Postmaster, Dermot McCorriston, said: “I have really enjoyed being a postmaster and providing a very important service to the community as I enjoy meeting and chatting to customers.

“I want to say a big thank you to all of my loyal customers. I really was overwhelmed by the kind words, support and generosity shown when it became common knowledge that I was retiring. People have made the effort to come in to say thank you and goodbye.”

“I now have time to relax and think of my future plans.”
