Earlier this week, a plea hearing was set for a former post office worker accused of stealing ballots, then filling them out and returning them to be counted during November’s general election.

Vicki Lyn Stuart has been charged with identity theft, forgery and attempt to influence a public servant. A plea hearing has been set for May 5.

Elections staff reported the incident to the 21st Judicial District Attorney Investigators on Oct. 21, 2024. In Colorado, the District Attorney’s Office is tasked with investigating crimes related to elections, and DA Investigators immediately launched a criminal investigation with the assistance and coordination of other local, state and federal agencies — including the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser — according to a news release.

The impacted voters resided in the same subdivision, according to the arrest affidavit, and two different locked mailboxes were affected.

Stuart is accused of stealing the ballots and delivering them to her friend, Sally Jane Maxedon (a.k.a. Smith), who is also charged in the case. Smith then filled out the ballots. Her case is still moving through the court system.
