Officials now say the suspicious device found Thursday morning at a U.S. Postal Service facility on Villanova Drive in South Fulton was not an explosive, despite earlier statements indicating it was a “real explosive.”

Large police response

What we know:

The discovery prompted evacuations and a large emergency response at the building on 125 Villanova Drive. An employee first spotted the item and immediately contacted police. The Atlanta Police Department Bomb Squad and the South Fulton Police Department responded to assess the threat.

Initial Determination Disputed by Later Testing

What they’re saying:

Shortly after noon, the South Fulton Police Department told FOX 5 Atlanta that the object was a real explosive device — and that this was not the first similar incident at the location. But following additional X-ray scans at Dobbins Air Reserve Base and a controlled detonation at a disposal site, officials confirmed there were no explosive materials inside.

Authorities now say the item was military ordnance.
