On May 9, the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors announced the selection of David Steiner as the nation’s 76th postmaster general. Steiner has served on the board of FedEx and is a former CEO of Waste Management. He is set to take over sometime in July.
The National Newspaper Association (NNA), which represents newspapers across the nation that have been fraught with newspaper delivery service failures for the past five years, welcomed the new appointment.
“We look forward to working with PMG Steiner to help change course and restore the confidence of publishers in the USPS,” said NNA Chair Martha Diaz Aszkenazy, publisher of The San Fernando Valley Sun in California. “The selection of Steiner clearly heeds the administration’s call for a change in direction that is desperately needed.”
The former USPS head, Louis DeJoy, resigned in late March after nearly five years in the position, leaving as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency had floated the idea of privatizing mail service, according to reporting from the Associated Press. Trump had said he had considered putting the USPS under the control of the Commerce Department in an attempt to stop losses at the $78 billion-a-year agency.
