NALC honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

NALC President Brian L. Renfroe issued the following statement:

Today, NALC joins all Americans in honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was a trailblazer in the civil rights and labor movements, and his message that civil rights, economic justice, and the dignity of work are deeply intertwined still resonates today.

More than 60 years ago, Dr. King passionately laid out his dream for our nation at the March on Washington. While we reflect on how far we’ve come, today we recommit to the fight to fully realize his vision. As such, NALC remains committed to service, voting rights, equality, and combatting discrimination and injustice. These principles are deeply ingrained in our union, and those battles are far from over.

As we remember Dr. King’s impact, today also marks a transition for our country. In the transition to President Donald J. Trump’s second term, Dr. King’s teachings and legacy will guide NALC in the face of adversity and opportunity for our union. How we’ll fight and succeed is how we always have—together. This powerful message from Dr. King rings true today:

“We can all get more together than we can apart. And this is the way we gain power. Power is the ability to achieve purpose, power is the ability to effect change, and we need power.”
