HAYS, N.C. — Newly released search warrant documents provide additional details in the murder case of a Wilkes County mail carrier, alleging the suspect claimed he had been in a relationship with the victim before she ended it just days before she was killed.
According to court records, 56-year-old William Craig Durham of Roaring River told investigators he and 35-year-old Brandi Byrd Reynolds had been involved in a relationship for several months. Investigators say Reynolds was fatally shot while delivering mail on June 26.
The affidavit states Durham admitted shooting Reynolds after deputies found him at the scene. Authorities also allege multiple vehicle collisions occurred between Durham’s Nissan Altima and Reynolds’ Hyundai Santa Fe before the shooting.
Investigators say family members told authorities Durham had previously threatened Reynolds, broken into her home and had access to her property. Search warrants were later issued for the vehicles involved, a camper, a storage building and two cell phones believed to belong to Reynolds.
The documents also reveal Durham has prior convictions, including possession of a firearm by a felon, obtaining property by false pretenses and habitual misdemeanor assault. Court records show restraining orders had previously been filed against him.
Durham remains in the Wilkes County Jail without bond. He is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping
