More than $3M in federal checks stolen in Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn, official says

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Thieves have allegedly stolen more than $3 million in federal checks from residents of Staten Island and South Brooklyn, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis announced Wednesday, and she’d like to see more done to stop it.

Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) and Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), chair of the House Committee on Ways and Means, calling for more action from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and the Department of the Treasury.

The congresswoman said in her district alone that dozens of constituents had reported thefts of things like IRS and Social Security benefit checks.

“Many of my constituents are hardworking taxpayers and senior citizens on Social Security, and when a check goes missing or is stolen, it directly impacts their livelihood,” Malliotakis said. “I am thankful to Chairman Jason Smith for working with me to highlight this important issue so we can protect American citizens across the country and their tax dollars. We are calling on these federal agencies to work together and bust this robust criminal operation and bring those responsible to justice.”
