Mail theft increases in the summer; residents urged to take action

“The United States Postal Inspection Service is the federal law enforcement agency responsible for protecting the United States Postal Service. Every piece of mail is important to us. We are working diligently with local police departments and the federal justice system to catch and hold responsible the individuals stealing from USPS Blue Boxes and neighborhood mailboxes. However, it takes a significant amount of time and resources to build a strong enough case to ensure the perpetrators are prevented from continually victimizing our communities. While we are working to put these criminals behind bars, we urge the public to deposit their mail, especially checks or any documents containing personal or financial information, inside the post office to ensure the mail reaches the intended recipient.

“Additionally, the US Postal Service is installing thousands of new, high security blue boxes and changing the traditional lock and key used to access mailboxes with an electronic system. These measures are intended to provide a much higher level of security that will continue to ensure public trust in the US Mail.

“If our customers have any missing mail or realize they are a victim of identity theft or check fraud due to mail theft, we encourage them to file a report either online at https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/ or by phone at 877-876-2455. The security of the US Mail is important to us – any leads associated to the individuals responsible for mail theft and related check fraud are greatly appreciated and will be promptly pursued.
