Mail carrier saves two lives after house explosion

HERMANTOWN, Minn. (Northern News Now) – During a house explosion at Green Acres townhomes on Saturday night, Duluth post office mail carrier Misty Newman saved two residents from their burning homes.

Newman said she was on her way home to Meadowlands when she saw a ball of fire rise from an explosion in a neighborhood where she had delivered mail.

She said she didn’t even think; she just turned and drove into the neighborhood and ran into the flames.

“I wasn’t thinking anything other than ‘get them out,’” said Newman.

Without hesitation, she went into the neighborhood and found an apartment complex ablaze and neighbors in terror, arriving just moments after a building exploded.

“The residents were just in disarray; everything was everywhere,” said Newman. “So, I just grabbed and went.”

She heard from neighbors that people were still inside the building.

So, Newman ran into an apartment, saving the woman inside before it was fully engulfed in flames.

“The window frames were lying outside, there were no pictures on the wall, and the poor lady inside just wanted me to get her quiche out of the oven,” said Newman.

After that woman was safe and warm in Newman’s car, she went into another apartment, saving another resident.
