Mail carrier off route after confrontation with police

The mail carrier who had an altercation with police in Lindenwood in mid-August has not been seen on the route since then and is believed to be officially off it, an area resident tells the Chronicle.

The resident, Lori Di Toro, had filed a number of complaints about the mailman, Jerome McCain, over a couple of years, regarding undelivered mail and packages, a missing credit card and other issues. After McCain scuffled with police on Aug. 11, resulting in his being hit with a Taser and handcuffed, though not charged with any infraction, Di Toro contacted the paper.

An article about the incident, which was caught on video, and other problems with mail delivery at the Lindenwood Gardens Co-op, at the corner of 79th Street and 155th Avenue in Howard Beach, was published in the Chronicle Aug. 20. It cited more than half a dozen sources, including four residents of the co-op and its manager.

Some were sympathetic to McCain, saying a medical issue could be having an impact. Others related what happened the day police were called to the co-op over residents’ concerns about his behavior.
