Holladay neighborhood celebrates mail carrier who connected with generations for 41 years

For most of us, the mail just shows up. But in one Holladay neighborhood, the man behind the mail became part of the family.

For 41 years, Whit Wettstein delivered mail along the same route, and over time, the job became much more than letters and packages.

“I watched these kids grow up and they watched me get old,” Whit said.

Neighbors say Whit became part of their everyday lives. Kids would run outside when they heard his mail truck coming. Sometimes, the mail stops even turned into a quick game of catch.

“There were a handful of kids I would see almost every day,” Whit said. “We threw football and baseball.”

One young neighbor said that was the best part. “I like just throwing the football with him,” he said.

For the families on his route, Whit was the mailman who knew everyone by name.
