WAVERLY — A federal grand jury has indicted a former Waverly postmaster on fraud charges.
The indictment, handed up Friday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, alleges Merri A. Burgart submitted bogus mileage entries for reimbursement on rural postal carrier routes in August and October 2023.
She allegedly filed an equipment maintenance allowance for a personal vehicle for 727 miles on one day and for 545 miles on another day, records state. The reimbursements were wired to a credit union account she controlled, records state.
At the time, mileage reimbursement was between 91 and 95 cents per mile.
She also allegedly didn’t scan the mail on certain days to hide the fraudulent mileage claims, court records state.
Burgart is charged with one count of wire fraud.
