Government responds to defense motions in letter carrier murder case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Federal prosecutors said Wednesday the defense for one of two men accused of murdering a letter carrier in Warren has not met the burden for disclosure of the identity of a cooperating witness — if there is one.

In papers filed before U.S. Judge Donald C. Nugent in the U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio, the government said it would not confirm or deny it has a cooperating witness.

The papers were filed in response to an earlier motion filed by attorneys for Thomas Sledge, 44, who is charged with the March 2, 2024, shooting death of Jont’e Davis, 33, at Washington Street NE and Olive Avenue NE while Davis was delivering mail.

Also charged is Kaprise Sledge, 24, the son of Thomas Sledge.

The two are eligible for the death penalty if convicted, but the government has yet to decide if it will seek the death penalty. A trial date has not been set yet. Court records show a hearing will be held on Wednesday for both men before Judge Nugent to discuss discovery issues.
