Don’t use a postal credit card for personal expenses

The Postal Service is reminding employees that Voyager credit cards and GSA SmartPay travel credit cards are USPS property and should not be used for any personal expenses — even if you plan to reimburse the organization for the purchase.

Misusing a Postal Service-issued credit card is a federal crime. It is also one of the most frequent ethics violations.

Employees who misuse government credit cards may be subject to firing, fines, wage garnishment or jail time.

In one instance, an employee was caught using her Voyager card to fuel other people’s personal vehicles. She was subsequently fired, sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to pay more than $24,000 in restitution.

Another case involved a postmaster using a travel card at restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores and hotels — without being on official travel. During actual USPS travel status, the employee used the card for food and groceries despite receiving per diem payments.

Employees with questions can email the USPS Ethics Office or call 202-268-6346.
