SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Reports of a package exploding in a U.S. Postal Service truck on Friday turned out to be a leaking can of dog repellent.
Several crews responded to the scene outside the South Burlington Post Office at about 12:30 p.m. When fire and hazmat crews arrived, they found a package had some sort of liquid around it.
An investigation determined that a can of dog repellent burst or began leaking inside the USPS truck. Fluid from the can then got onto some of the packages, which led to the concern that a package exploded.
First responders say people initially at the scene were evaluated at the hospital due to exposure to the irritant.
“People that had the respiratory irritant, it was a minor irritant. At this time there’s not concern that whatever was in the package was any chemical that was any major toxicity or anything like that,” South Burlington Deputy Fire Chief Chris Corbin said.
The Vermont State Police bomb squad and their robot were also on scene as a precaution.
