Defense attorneys get continuance in mail carrier death trial

CLEVELAND (WKBN) — A request by defense attorneys for a continuance at the beginning of the trial in federal court for two men accused of killing a letter carrier while he was making his rounds has been granted.

Jury selection was to begin Monday for Thomas Sledge, 46, and Kaprise Sledge, 25, who both face charges of murder of an officer and employee of the United States and use or discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

U.S. Judge Donald C. Nugent is hearing the case in the U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio.

They are accused of the March 2, 2024, shooting death of 33-year-old Jont’e Davis as he was delivering mail at Washington Street NE and Olive Avenue NE.

The pair were not indicted by a federal grand jury until Oct. 2, 2024. Jury selection was to begin Monday.
