Washington – The newly appointed Postmaster General recently got a letter from the Congressional Postal Service Caucus calling for a reassessment of previous reform plans.

The co-chairs of the caucus include U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-Illinois), as well as U.S. Reps. Jack Bergman of Michigan, Chris Pappas of New Hampshire and Andrew Garbarino of New York. They outlined their top priorities for improving the United States Postal Service (USPS) and addressing concerns with previous plans, such as the Delivering For America and Regional Transportation Optimization plans.

“While we fully support modernization efforts within the Postal Service, these changes must not come at the expense of postal employees or the millions of Americans who rely on reliable, on-time delivery every day,” the letter read. “We respectfully urge you to temporarily pause any implementation of the Delivering For America plan until it can be reworked to ensure that no customers experience slower delivery as a result.”

They also underlined the importance of the Universal Service Obligation, which guarantees that every American, regardless of where they live, can send and receive mail at a uniform price. It is considered a cornerstone of the USPS mission, according to the letter.

The congressmen wrote that former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s plan caused steady declines in on-time delivery performance, down to 66.8 percent nationally instead of the goal of 80-90 percent. “This drastic decline in on-time delivery means our constituents are not receiving essential items like paychecks, bills, food, and even medicine in a timely manner.”
