CLIFTON – A Clifton Post Office employee who used her nursing experience to help save an 8-month-old baby who stopped breathing inside the post office was honored Tuesday by U.S. Postal Service leadership.
Retail Associate Mary Schwarz received the Postmaster General Hero Award and a challenge coin during a Sept. 22 ceremony at the Clifton Post Office. WestPac Area Retail and Delivery Operations Vice President Ed Ruiz presented the recognition, with Arizona-New Mexico District Manager Avi Kumar, Manager Post Office Operations Jorge Lopez and Acting Tucson Postmaster Frank Cetta among those attending.
Also present were Clifton Police Lt. Shari Aguilar and Rudy and Kylie Vega, whose daughter, Nova, Schwarz helped save on July 11.
Schwarz said she has been overwhelmed by the support she has received from the local community and USPS and never expected the incident to result in the level of recognition she has received.
