BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — New legislation has been introduced in Lansing to rename the Battle Creek Post Office after an American abolitionist, Sojourner Truth.
Lawmakers are looking to change the name to the Sojourner Truth Post Office.
This idea to rename the office is supported by Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek Unlimited, and by Sojourner Truth’s descendants, according to Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Michigan).
“This is an important way to honor the life, legacy, and impact of Sojourner Truth,” Huizenga said. “Designating the Sojourner Truth Post Office in Battle Creek also highlights the significant role the community played in the abolition movement and our nation’s history.”
The bill was first introduced in the Senate in April by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) and Sen. Gary Peters (D-Michigan).
