Atlanta’s main post office renamed to honor Civil Rights icon John Lewis

ATLANTA — Atlanta’s Main Post Office was dedicated to honor the life and legacy of Civil Rights icon and longtime U.S. Congressman John Lewis.

The dedication ceremony was held Wednesday, on what would’ve been Lewis’ 84th birthday — 84 balloons were released in his honor at the post office along Crown Road.

Back in October 2022, HR 5577 was signed into law to designate the main post office as the John R. Lewis Post Office Building.

In the ceremony, the postal service described the former congressman and advocate as “devoted to equality and justice for all Americans.”

Members of John Lewis’ family, including his brother Henry Lewis, attended the dedication ceremony.
