Assault of mail carrier cuts off postal service for 200-unit apartment complex

KALAMAZOO, MI — Residents of Interfaith Homes are waiting and hoping for mail service to return after an incident at the 200-unit complex led to the U.S. Postal Service cutting off the entire community.

Residents began noticing their mail delivery stopped earlier this month. A letter then appeared on their apartment doors.

Placed by management of the complex, the letters informed tenants that a mail carrier was assaulted and residents would have to travel several miles to pick up their mail, residents told MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette.

A U.S. Postal Service media contact confirmed delivery has been suspended for Interfaith Homes and declined to comment on the letter residents received.

The USPS, which investigates assaults and threats against postal employees, said an alleged “incident” took place on or about Sept. 10, declining to share more because of the ongoing investigation.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of USPS employees is a top priority for us,” said Nick Williamson, postal inspector team leader and public information officer at the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Grand Rapids.
