America’s only floating post office marks 150+ years supplying Great Lakes

Massive cargo ships move through the Great Lakes every day, carrying the goods that help keep Michigan’s economy running. But when crews need vital supplies, packages from home or even a hot meal while they’re still underway, a small team on the Detroit River is often the one that answers the call.

Just beneath the Ambassador Bridge, the J.W. Westcott Co. has operated for a little more than 150 years, serving vessels traveling through the region. The company delivers mail, packages and other supplies to ships while they are still on the move, a role that has made it a fixture in Great Lakes shipping for generations.
