Trump Holds up TSP as a Model for Workers Without Employer Plans

President Trump used his recent State of the Union address to propose creating a TSP–style retirement savings account for American workers whose employers do not offer retirement benefits, aiming to expand access to low-cost investment options modeled on the federal government’s own program.

The proposal – which echos an idea in circulation a decade ago that never gained traction in Congress – would extend key features of the TSP, long regarded as one of the most efficient defined contribution retirement systems in the country, to millions of private-sector workers currently without workplace retirement coverage.
