‘It’s trial by fire’; Former postal carrier questions being let go

WATERTOWN — When Rhianon Morgan looks out her window at home, she can’t help but see a “Now Hiring” sign outside of the Watertown Post Office.

She applied for a postal carrier position in March 2025, but was let go just short of her three-month probationary period.

Morgan blames it on a day where she was overwhelmed with a heavy load of mail and could not foresee completing her deliveries in a timely manner.

“I was planning on being a postal carrier for 30-plus years,” she said. “I believed it to be a very rewarding career.”

She left a non-profit organization in Madison and wanted to try a new venture where she could rely on her communication and people skills, but it never came to fruition.

After delivering mail and collecting canned goods for 11 hours, she received a letter of separation from the Watertown Post Office during the United States Postal Service’s Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive, which is held on the second Saturday in May.

“With having received great feedback and maintaining a positive attitude, despite the negative conditions, the firing came as a shock to me, as well as some of the carriers I have gotten to know,” Morgan said.
