A purchase on the dark web resulted in a lockdown at a local postal processing center, as law enforcement inspected a suspicious package and arrested the recipient.
An employee at the United States Postal Service processing center on Jetport Loop near RSW was present during the lockdown and spoke exclusively to WINK News.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno says LCSO intercepted a package sent to Daniel Pesantas that contained 50 Xanax pills, purchased with cryptocurrency.
The USPS employee described the tense situation as multiple law enforcement agencies arrived at the post office.
“They made a loudspeaker announcement that we were on a lockdown,” said the USPS employee, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear of losing their job. “Nobody seemed to know anything. Even up till now, nobody’s been able to tell us what happened.”
The employee stated that this was the first time in decades of working at the post office that they experienced a lockdown.
“I did see a Lee County Deputy car leave, an unmarked car, and I did see a forensic unit van, type of thing leave,” said the employee.
During the lockdown, employees continued working as usual.
According to the employee, “employees inside the building could not go outside, but the employees outside could come in.”
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the post office said the lockdown lasted 30 minutes.
The anonymous USPS employee expressed disbelief at the situation.
