SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As mail-in voting gets underway for November’s special election, nearly 100 stolen mail-in ballots were discovered at a homeless encampment in Sacramento.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found 99 unvoted ballots during a scheduled cleanup Wednesday in a field near Mayhew Road and Elder Creek Road. Investigators are now trying to determine how the ballots ended up there.
“Every theory is open at this point. And again, in these transient populations people, again, don’t want to really deep dive, but you understand, it’s a very hodgepodge mix of people,” said Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
County officials said the ballots originated from voters living in the South Sacramento area along Gerber Road. The Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections Office confirmed that the recovered ballots were unmarked and were voided shortly after being found.
Still, some residents have expressed concerns about ballot security as mail-in voting continues.
