The Postal Service will release its stamp honoring former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Carter, the 39th president, guided the nation through an energy crisis, economic struggles and international tensions. His administration’s notable accomplishments included the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, and the establishment of diplomatic relations with China.

After his term ended in 1981, he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta, where the former president worked tirelessly to advance human rights, monitor elections and eradicate diseases. For decades, well into his 90s, Carter helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity, side by side with other volunteers.

In 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Carter the Nobel Peace Prize for his decades of work promoting peace, democracy and human rights.

Carter died Dec. 29, 2024, at age 100.

The Forever stamp, announced Aug. 16, was designed by Ethel Kessler, an art director for USPS. It features a 1982 oil-on-linen painting by Herbert Abrams, who used it to prepare for Carter’s official White House portrait.

The stamp will be available in panes of 20 at Post Offices and on usps.com.
