Family in agony as USPS loses husband’s ashes again

A family is in distress as the ashes of Sheila Smith’s late husband, Doug, have been missing in the mail for three months.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) last scanned the package at a distribution center in Lee County on January 16, and it has since vanished.

“It’s very frustrating. It’s unbelievable. We can’t close that part of it for us until we have his ashes,” said Sheila Smith emotionally.

Doug and Sheila Smith, Canadian residents, cherished their almost 50 years together, often spending it at their second home in Port Charlotte. Doug passed away unexpectedly in early January, and his ashes were supposed to be in Canada within days.

“We’ve traveled over the years. We just had a lot of fun. We had a good marriage,” said Smith.

Doug was a guy who lived life to the fullest. He was a beloved husband, father, and entrepreneur.
