Bipartisan Senate Group Backs Keeping USPS as Independent Entity

A bipartisan group of six senators has backed keeping the U.S. Postal Service as an independent entity, at a time when the vacancy of the Postmaster General position is being eyed as a potential opening for the Trump administration to privatize more postal operations and/or move the USPS into the Commerce Department.

It expresses the view that “privatization of the United States Postal Service would result in higher prices and reduced services for its customers, especially in rural communities” and “would jeopardize the booming e-commerce sector and cripple a major part of the critical infrastructure of the United States.” Therefore, it says, “Congress should take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the Federal Government and not subject to privatization.”
