Mass Shooting at Montclair Post Office Remembered 30 Years Later

Three decades after the shooting deaths of her husband and three other men at what was then the Fairfield Street post office in Montclair, Cathy Ann Kearney remembers the day vividly.

Kearney, now 70, received a call from another postal worker’s wife, who told her she had to get to the post office immediately.

“When I got there, I was told that he was shot in the back,” Kearney said. “I thought that they meant he had been shot in the back of his body.”

A former colleague shot Scott Walensky, 41, Ernie Spruill, 56, Robert S. Leslie, 37, George Lomaga, 59, and Dave Grossman, 45, in the head at the rear of the post office. All died except for Grossman.
