Beloved Holly mail carrier receives first-ever key to the village

HOLLY, Mich. (WJRT) – A mail carrier who been delivering smiles throughout the village of Holly for more than 20 years received the town’s highest honor Tuesday evening.

The Holly Village Council presented its first ever key to the village award to John Hansen. The U.S. Mail carrier is beloved for brightening the lives of residents with a cheerful hello, word of encouragement, joke or helping hand.

Hansen walks 8 miles per day on his route through rain, hail, snow and heat. He always has a sunny disposition for people he encounters along the route.

“Well I love my job,” Hansen said. “I work five days a week. I walk about 8 miles a day. I have an all walking route and I get to see all these beautiful people every day, so my life is blessed.”

Hansen, who lives in Davison, picked up his mailbag in 1995 while living in Florida and he hasn’t put it down since. He said the best part about being a mailman is the people he’s met along the way.
