USPS employee who shot coworker to death at Missouri City facility identified

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – The United States Postal Service (USPS) worker accused of shooting his coworker to death at a facility in Missouri City Monday night has been identified and charged.

Derrick Lott, 24, has since been charged with murder, according to USPS. Lott is accused of going inside the USPS regional processing facility located on US 90 East around 10 p.m. and shooting and killing his co-worker, USPS contractor Kevin Hines.

“This was a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said U.S. Postal Inspection Service Acting Inspector in Charge, Monda Hernandez. ” Our employees deserve to feel safe when they come to work. Postal inspectors are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served on behalf of Kevin Hines, his family, and all of the employees who work in this facility.”

USPS released the following statement regarding the deadly shooting:

“The U.S. Postal Service is deeply shocked and saddened by the incident on Dec. 9 at the South Houston Local Processing Center (LPC) in Missouri City, TX. The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating in partnership with local law enforcement. The Postal Service does not comment on active investigations. We are currently focused on providing needed resources and support for all employees at this facility. Because the location remains an active crime scene, some temporary operational disruptions occurred; however, the Postal Service is deploying contingency plans designed to work around such situations. We will continue to monitor conditions and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the timely and efficient processing of all mail and packages. We appreciate our employees’ dedication and our customers’ patience at this time.”
