The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General’s Work in the 2024 General Election

ARLINGTON, VA – Today, Tammy Hull, United States Postal Service Inspector General, announced the release of a video highlighting the Election Mail oversight work her agency performed during the 2024 general election. The USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) visited postal facilities in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., providing oversight to “ensure ballots are delivered when and where they need to be.”

Highlights of this agency-wide effort during the general election included:

  • Approximately 360 auditors and special agents visiting over 1,000 postal facilities, including about 70 processing plants and 950 delivery units.
  • Our Chief Information Office developed a mobile app that enabled our special agents and auditors to track and communicate findings in real time.
  • Our data analytics team developed tools to identify mailflow anomalies, allowing us to quickly pivot and direct resources to locations needing oversight.
  • While at the facilities, we were able to notify local postal management of issues we found.
  • We kept open lines of communication, providing weekly updates on our findings to senior postal management, the Postal Service Board of Governors, and Congress.

“Our oversight work during this election is a great example of the value we provide the Postal Service and the entire nation,” Hull stated. “I’m proud of every individual that makes up the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General and am honored to play an important part in maintaining America’s trust in the Postal Service and its role in our democracy.”
