Hawley Police say drunk driver killed White Mills postmaster in Route 6 crash

Elizabeth A. Struble, postmaster of the White Mills Post Office, was killed Saturday, Oct. 5, driving east toward Hawley, after being struck by an SUV on Route 6. The driver of this vehicle was apprehended after fleeing on foot, Hawley Borough Police said, and is facing felony charges.

At approximately 2:33 p.m., the police affidavit states, Tyler Nathaniel Canfield, 27, of Honesdale, was driving west on Route 6 in Palmyra Township in a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, a small SUV. He was just west of Hawleywood Hills when he crossed the center line and struck a 2013 Ford Fusion being driven by Struble, head-on. Police said the impact caused Struble to die at the scene.

Officer Lee Rowan said in the affidavit that a witness told him that he was following the Equinox west on Route 6 from the area of Main and River streets in Hawley. The witness and his passenger observed the driver “drive over the center line numerous times and drive over the fog line several times,” the affidavit says. They saw this vehicle swerve and almost hit the Hawleywood Hills sign and rock wall and then go back into his lane.
