Greene County postal worker killed in crash

ASHLAND — A U.S. Postal Service employee from East Durham was killed in a two-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon on Route 10.

Gina H. Hernandez, 62, of East Durham, was traveling east on county Route 10 in a U.S. Postal Service vehicle at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday when her vehicle collided near the center of the road, near Sutton Hollow Road in Ashland, with a 2008 Lexus RX 350 driven by an unnamed 17-year-old male heading westbound on Route 10, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

“Gina H. Hernandez was the only occupant of her vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. “The 17-year-old male was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital for evaluation.”

The Postal Service acknowledged Saturday’s accident.

“I can confirm that one of our employees did suffer a fatality this weekend,” Steve Doherty, a Postal Service strategic communications specialist, said in an email Monday. “Our carriers are in our local neighborhoods everyday contending with hazards ranging from weather to loose pets and, of course, traffic. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The police investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing and anyone with information is should contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the accident scene Saturday were New York State Police, Ashland Fire Department, Ashland Ambulance and Greene County Paramedics.
