Post Office renamed to honor war hero

Richfield’s post office has been renamed to honor a longtime resident and World War II hero.

The Charles W. Lindberg Post Office at 825 W. 65th St. was dedicated Aug. 29 during a ceremony across the street from the building.

In 2022, Congress renamed the city’s post office to honor Lindberg, a United States Marine and native of Grand Forks, North Dakota. He made history as a member of the first group to raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

Lindberg — who enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and volunteered for the elite Marine Raiders unit — served as a flamethrower operator with 3rd Platoon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division.
