Lives saved, burglar foiled: Newton mail carrier honored after career of heroic deliveries

Harry Kaplan walked the same route in Newton for 35 of his 38 years as a mailman.

It may have been routine, but it certainly wasn’t boring, at least in Kaplan’s telling. The unofficial creed of postal carriers declares: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

In Kaplan’s case, you can add medical emergencies, a foiled burglary and a toddler rescue, among other drama.

The 76-year-old, originally from Passaic County, was honored at Monday night’s Newton Town Council meeting as the town’s Senior Citizen of the Year, a recognition for a lifetime of service that also included time in the U.S. Army and with local volunteer groups.
