Fifty-four year letter carrier gets his job back

PORT JERVIS – Seventy-five-year-old Port Jervis letter carrier Thomas “Tom” Calvario will be back on his route soon, maybe even this week.

Calvario has been informed that he won an arbitration case to get his job back, and says he was told he would be gladly welcomed back by Port Jervis’ new postmaster.

On November 28, 2023, Calvario was handed his coat, escorted to his car, and suspended from his job for what then Port Jervis postmaster – since retired – told him was “unsatisfactory work performance.” Examples provided in a letter to Calvario cited failure to complete work demands and requirements that he had signed on to on his hire date – August 27, 1970. Calvario, at that time, was one of three top postal exam scorers and had received additional points for being a U.S. veteran.

Calvario received multiple commendations during his 54-year career with the post office, including one from current Postmaster General/CEO Louis DeJoy.  DeJoy’s commendation was dated November 26, 2023 – two days before Calvario’s suspension.  It was similar to one received five years earlier from Postmaster General/CEO Megan Brennan.
