USPS unveils sorter in Avondale regional facility expected to boost efficiency by 75%

AVONDALE, Ariz. — A new cutting-edge sorting machine was unveiled at the U.S. Postal Service processing facility in Avondale on Thursday.

The Matrix East/West Sorter (MEWS) at the Regional Processing and Distribution Center (RPDC) can sort up to 50,000 packages per hour.

Officials said it’s a milestone in a nationwide modernization effort and expect to increase efficiency by 75% at the facility.

“This isn’t just about technology—it’s about delivering better service to our customers and empowering our employees,” said Sunny Kuruvilla, the executive plant manager.

It’s part of efforts taking place across the country that aim to upgrade facilities, improve delivery speed, and strengthen service reliability.

The $40 billion investment is part of a 10-year transformation strategy for the USPS.
