Postal Service Overhaul Stirs Concerns as Vermont Rural Deliveries Face Delays

NEWPORT — Residents and businesses in Orleans County are among those experiencing the negative service impacts of the US Postal Service’s (USPS) “Delivering for America” (DFA) plan, a comprehensive 10-year overhaul launched in 2021. While the initiative aims to make the USPS financially sustainable and improve service, concerns persist over service quality, particularly in rural areas like those found in the Northeast Kingdom.

The impact of the nationwide service disruptions, which have gained attention from national media and members of Congress, are beginning to affect postal customers here in Orleans County and other rural areas throughout Vermont.

The DFA plan, which was introduced under former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, aimed to reverse a projected $160 billion loss, improve on-time delivery rates by 95 percent, and invest $40 billion in workforce, infrastructure, and technology.

DeJoy resigned in March 2025, with Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino taking over until a permanent replacement was appointed. On July 15, 2025, FedEx board member David Steiner began his tenure as the 76th Postmaster General of the United States and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Postal Service.

Vermont? Get in line guys, the whole country is suffering from what we all know is the poorest service ever. It’s a combination of work hour focus, a shortage of people willing to take what management out, and aggressive DEI policies. I guess the new PMG will tell us today the way forward.
